Belts and Suspenders Faith!
It seems like if you have suspenders, you wouldn't need a belt. Or, likewise, if you had a belt, you wouldn't need suspenders.
How many things does it take to hold up one pair of slacks? Really, do pants need a plan B?
Here's the sad part! The belts-and-suspenders combination is often a picture of my faith in Christ.
The scripture clearly teaches that all of God's promises are yes and amen. Yet so many times, rather than taking Christ at His word, I have to have my own back-up plan. It's kinda like having spiritual belts and suspenders. And I could be wrong here, but I don't think I am the only person in the body who struggles with this, at least not from my observations.
There are lots of areas where I see this in my own life, but I recognize safety is an idol that a lot of us have. The belt-and-suspenders logic says that Christ would never call me to anything dangerous, so the ultimate factor in whether or not we do something is not the Lord's will, but the level of personal risk.
It's not enough that God is omipotent. I am also going to keep myself out of harm's way. The hard thing is that I am not truly free to follow the Lord anywhere, because if He leads me somewhere that's too dangerous, I have to defer and follow my true god of safety.
I am praying for myself and other that God would free us from this belts-and-suspenders spiritual mentality.
